Time to Get Moving!

December 2008

To All Members of the Class of 1971:

In this year’s Opening Exercises, President Tilghman emphasized the University’s goal of working 'in the Nation’s Service – and the Service of all Nations' by pointing out that:

CLICK HERE for the results of the 2008- 2009 AG Campaign! 'The challenge facing you is to embrace your studies in a way that only a university such as ours allows, but to do so without losing sight of the ultimate purpose of those studies. This purpose, in its most basic form, is to make our world a better place ethically, economically, socially, politically, environmentally and in a host of other ways, not just because you have to live in this world yourselves, but because more than 6.3 billion other people do as well.'

Many of Princeton’s students are doing this already. For her senior thesis, Ruth Tennen ’04 studied a gene in yeast that causes colon cancer in humans when it is mutated, making what her advisor called “a novel and significant contribution” to the field. Karim Thomas ’04 founded SPARKS, an organization that has helped establish a new school in the Afghan capital of Kabul and strives to promote youth involvement in community service worldwide. And through the Pace Center for Community Service, dozens of students contribute to community projects in Princeton, Trenton, and the surrounding area.

This year our goal is 50% participation and $225,000. We need your help on both counts. To achieve our participation goal we need to retain the donors who gave last year, and have ~ 60 more classmates join us. In addition to the great value our gifts contribute to Princeton, high participation encourages other organizations and foundations to increase their support to Princeton as well. I am hopeful that you will be a part of this group of 60 this year.

One of Princeton’s largest benefactors, trustee Peter B. Lewis ’55, said it perfectly:

'The beautiful thing about Princeton is that it's in a state of constant improvement, and I think that's the best way to define excellence: always improving.'

Please join me in doing our part to keep Princeton on the path of “always improving.”

Sincerely,

Jon Cieslak '71
